Marketing books

Hey ladies, I was thinking that it would be great if we each posted a book that has helped us with our business. I'd love to get some reading ideas. Mine was "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. What's yours?

Iphone and Droid Apps

I saw an app on a droid the other day called MyCoupons. For $20.00 per month, you can advertise within a 20 mile radius of your business. I am going to try it this month and see how it does. I am assuming iphone has something similar, but I haven't checked it out yet. Just another advertising idea for any of you who are looking for something different. It's likely to draw in a young to middle aged technology oriented crowd.

Next meeting!

I was looking through the notes, and we all forgot to bring our jump drives last meeting to get that good to great thing from Allison. Also, we could discuss SEO next time if anyone's interested.

April Meeting Minutes!

We had a great meeting in April! Can't wait to see everyone in May!

30 and Driven Meeting 4/15/2010

Members present: Allison Carenza, Karren Colbert, Valerie , Erin Parish

I) Questions, Information Randomly brought up in the meeting:
A) How did Allison get the review tab on her facebook page? Allison was not sure. However, Erin checked into this. If you search for applications you can find it. The application is called reviews. Just click add to my page, and add it to your business page. Simple! (=
B) A man named Seth Godin has a marketing blog that is really good. Everyone should check it out.
C) When writing your blog, you want to write it as if you’re trying to attract someone of the opposite sex. Make it interesting and short.
D) We should all do videos for utube and add social acceptance (testimonials) to our websites.
E) When bringing in an employee or other people to help you, it always helps to write a list of what qualities that ideal applicant should have. You should also write a list of the qualities of your ideal client so you can know what market you’re targeting.

II) Successes
A) Allison
1) Allison will have a gallery opening at first Fridays in August.
B) Valerie
1) The Hippie Chow Bag design is done, and it is cool!
C) Karren
1) Karren got a large group of people who regularly comment on her blog. It is making her experience much more enjoyable. Karren is getting a lot of traffic to her website.
2) 2 Kids signed up for Karren’s writing camp.
3) Jon is working on Karren’s logos.
D) Erin
1) Had a $3500.00 month. Is well on her way to bringing someone else into her office.

III) Head Trash-What things are holding us back or have held us back from being better business owners.
A) Allison
1) Allison always saw herself as a teacher and not as a photographer. She is transitioning to seeing herself as a photographer. She had a scarcity mentality when it came to teaching other photographers what she knows. She feels like she needs to make a certain amount of money, but she keeps telling herself happiness is more important than money.
B) Valerie
1) Had a misconception that you have to have a unique product and be super intelligent to be a business owner.
C) Karren
1) Karren has problems with ideas that keep coming. They never seem to stop, and one idea leads to another which creates difficulty focusing (we all agreed on having this problem). Karren has a fear of failure. She also fears rejection when it comes to selling her business. She has problems just walking into a place and asking for business.
D) Erin
1) Erin fears losing control of her business/business name. Erin doesn’t feel like she is an authority on her business, and she doesn’t feel like she would have anything to tell others if she were to speak about her business in front of them.

HEAD TRASH!!!

It's those invisible barriers that tell us we aren't good enough to achieve our dreams.   Or worse that we don't deserve it.  I constantly catch myself with head trash in the form of excuses, doubts, or fear.  What's your head trash?  Post as many as you can think of in the comments below.

Meeting Minutes 2/16/09

30 & Driven
2/16/2010 Meeting

I) We have a new member, Kim. Kim owns Girly Girl Vintage Handbags. She is also trying to pull together an art fair for Blue Springs. Her goal for the year is to do more fundraising events. Her achievement was getting on google ads, and she hopes to soon understand it. Welcome Kim!
II) Lisa joined us for the first time at the meeting. Her car broke down last time on the way to the meeting. Welcome Lisa!
III) Katie gave a talk on Marketing. Below are the details.
A) Create a Quality Brand
1) Quality brands are not just about your logo and business image. Branding also encompasses the image you project and what people think about you.
a) What do you think of when you think apple? Cool, chic, innovative. Apple is an example of good branding.
b) Toyota messed up with their branding. They focus on quality. Recently, they started focusing more on expansion and less on quality, and it hurt them.
2) Websites are critical for branding.
a) You need a graphic designer and a website designer to create a look and then to carry that look through to your website. Weebly.com has free website hosting.
b) Social acceptance on your website is very important. Post positive reviews of your service from your customers on your website.
B) The most important thing in branding is to decide what you want to represent and/or be.
C) Know your customer base to determine how to brand.
1) Once you’ve identified your audience, you have to figure out where they are shopping and advertise there.
a) Online advertising is a good way to go. Adwords, facebook, twitter, etc.
b) Blogger is not recognized by google very well, but wordpress is. Get a wordpress account if you’re going to blog.
c) Try Hercityguide.com also. You can advertise for free for the first 60 days. You can also try advertising in her life magazine.
d) Donate to auctions. Sunshine center is having an auction. There is a website out there where there’s a list of charities, Allison will find that. Rainbow center is also having a charity auction that you may be interested in.
e) When advertising on facebook, never link your ad to your website; always link it to your facebook fan page. If you get a fan, you can continue to put your business page in front of them, but they will only click on your website once. People who are on facebook like to stay on facebook.
f) Press releases don’t work very well. PR around a business opening is very good. Try to find PR connections and send out press releases at your first big business event.
g) Kid’s closet is doing a show for Blue Springs in April, and they are doing one in Lee’s Summit in March. The contact is Jill Moxley. Kid’s closet is off of 40 Highway behind Nature’s pantry.

IV) Allison announced that she read information on what makes business owners great instead of good. It explained the differences between people who make a lot of money versus people who just make an average living. She said it was very good. There is a book called Good to Great that covers this topic in detail by Jim Collins. Allison will share copies of what she read with us at the next meeting.
A) Valerie recommended a book called E Myth by Michael Gerber.

V) Katie said: Do not devalue your services. It is important to steer clear from offering free services. Instead, offer and ad on. For example, instead of offering 12 free cupcakes, offer 12 free cupcakes with your next order.
A) Katie also said to remember to do all kinds of things for marketing. Never focus on just one avenue for marketing, try lots of different things.
VI) Kim suggested that we go to hercityguide.com to find business events and promotions in the area. Kim meets business owners this way and supports local businesses this way.

Next Meeting:

I) Bring your jump drives to get info. From Allison on Good to Great.

II) We will be discussing Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and hopefully Allison’s friend Mark can join us for a talk.

January meeting!

Ok girls with Christmas behind us, and a new year fresh in front of us it's time for our first meeting.  This first one would be a perfect time to share our bookwork ideas.  The organization is miserable and I'm sure you guys have better ideas than I do.  I'm thinking we could meet at my house, I'll even have drinks and food, but we need to find a time that works for everyone.  Please post your ideas below.  Evenings, weekends, or mornings?  I can't wait to get together and start this year off with a bang!
